The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently conducting an investigation regarding last week's outbreak of a stomach bug that sickened roughly 150 people aboard the Disney Wonder cruise ship. The ship had been carrying roughly 2,7000 passengers and 1,000 crew members on a four-day cruise from Miami to the Bahamas when passengers started to become violently sick, experiencing severe vomiting. Sickened passengers were quarantined to their rooms for 24 hours, though cruise activities were not affected by the outbreak.
This is the most significant outbreak the cruise line has experienced since 2002, when 175 passengers aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship contracted a similar gastrointestinal illness resulting in severe vomiting and diarrhea. According to a representative from Disney Cruise Line, the company effected additional sanitation precautions such as continuous cleaning of handrails and shutting down self-service buffet areas to minimize passenger contact with food.
Upon returning to Miami on May 1st, a health official from the CDC boarded the ship and collected stool samples from those affected. The samples were sent away to be tested for pathogens.
