Symptoms of Caput Succedaneum
The primary symptom of this condition is puffiness under the skin of the baby’s scalp. In this area, a child’s skin will be swollen and soft, and pressing on it can result in a dimple in the flesh. There may be some discoloration or bruising, but it shouldn’t be too extensive. Typically, the condition will resolve itself within a few days and doesn’t require treatment. However, because the bruising caused by caput succedaneum may break down into bilirubin, there is a heightened risk of an infant developing jaundice. Jaundice typically doesn’t post problems unless it goes untreated. If the condition is untreated, it could result in several medical issues, including brain damage and, in severe cases, death.
